Dry Van

Dry vans are the most commonly used trailer operating on the roads today. These trailers are designed to protect the shipment from weather conditions and road hazards. Dry vans come in 48- and 53-foot lengths and are generally 8.5 feet wide. Dry vans are designed to be used with loading docks for easy packing and unpacking.

A dry van box is connected to the chassis of the trailer permanently. Some trailers move shipping containers that look similar to a dry van. These boxes, however, are only secured to the chassis temporarily for transportation and then removed when they arrive at a train or shipyard for further transportation.

A dry van can carry between 3,500 and 3,950 cubic feet of product weighing up to 45,000 pounds. Anything over this weight limit requires a special trailer and permits. Dry vans generally have wooden flooring and small railings down each side of the trailer on the interior. The railings are used as a place to tie-down straps that are securing the loads in place. Most loads that are shipped in a dry van are shipped on pallets.

Dry vans offer many benefits to the carrier as well as the shipper. Dry vans are readily available in any area of the country at all times, so you never have to wait to move your shipment. The vans are easy to load and can carry any type of packed materials. Most vans are packed with pallets for easier loading and unloading.

One of the best reasons for using a dry van is the security aspect. There is only one way to enter the van, and this single door system can be easily secured.

You do not have to worry about anyone tampering with your load as it heads to its destination.

Common Uses of Dry Van Trailers

The main reason that dry vans are the most popular trailer used in shipping is that they provide protection to the shipments as well as security. A dry van has only one entry point, and you can keep this locked and secured with ease. Because of these two features, dry vans can be used to ship just about any type of shipment that does not require refrigeration.

Dry vans can be used for short and long hauls. The ability to load and unload pallets quickly makes this a preferred trailer type for non-perishable foods, mass merchandise, and textiles. Dry vans are also used by small carriers that are making multiple deliveries in a local area.
